Is There Legitimate Work At Home Jobs?

Let’s say you’re confronted with a mountain of debt and you just can’t find any more ways to cut your spending to get out from under it. So now you’re wondering if there is a way to make money at home to supplement your regular income.

Yes, there are

There are a number of legitimate work-at-home jobs. Some of these are actual jobs while with others, you function as an independent contractor. In some cases you can make money at home just by creating your own business. Of course, this is the dream of many people – to fire your boss, go home, earn big money and never have another real job again.

Call center jobs

Many companies are now on-shoring jobs. As you might guess, this is the opposite of off-shoring jobs. Probably the number one example of on-shoring is customer service jobs. As an example of this, the company Virtual Vocations was recently advertising work from home customer service jobs for people living in Colorado, Arizona, Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, or Texas. You could get one of these jobs on either a full- or part-time basis. These jobs generally pay from $8 to $15 an hour. Companies that employ work-at-home customer service agents include U-Haul, American Express, Apple, AAA, and it seems that Amazon may soon start hiring work-at-home customer service people.

Mystery shopper

I don’t know why this is true but the mystery shopper industry is really growing. In fact it was up 7% from 2010 to 2011. If this appeals to you as a work-at-home job, do watch out for scams. If you can find legitimate mystery shopper jobs, expect to earn from $5-$160 per assignment. In some cases, you won’t even have to leave home, as you will be making calls to businesses to rate their services.

Writer/editor

Do you have excellent writing or editing skills? There are jobs in abundance for writers and editors, thanks to the Internet. Writers are needed to provide content for websites in the form of articles and posts. This work usually pays 10 cents to $2 per word, depending on your experience and skills.

If you’re good at proofreading and editing, you can work at improving manuscripts of all types, including textbooks. More experienced journalists and writers can become free lancers, work from home and make good money.

Internet entrepreneur

You could potentially make millions of dollars as an Internet entrepreneur. This is where you create websites to sell your own products or as an affiliate where you promote other peoples’ or companies’ products and earn a commission. Amazon is the “800 pound gorilla” of affiliate marketing and hundreds of people have made hundreds of thousands of dollars promoting its products. Or you could develop a website like Mark Zuckerberg did with Facebook, take it public and earn several billion dollars.

Create Apps

If you’re technically minded as well as creative, you could make good money developing apps for today’s smart phones. For example, one struggling startup hit huge with the smart phone game “Draw Something.” The media game company Zynga purchased it earlier this year for nearly $200 million.

If none of this appeals to you
